La Reina Obrera Renovation in Madrid
La Reina Obrera designed this Madrid apartment to reinterpret the functional and creative use of space of the American Case Study Houses of the '50s and '60s. The firm's concept is characterized by atypical lines and an unconventional blend of different styles and materials that harmoniously meld with the coziness of the space.
The materials used in the project include the SapienStone Uni Ice countertop used to dress the kitchen with a pure white color and matte finish. Made from high quality sintered stone, the boldness of the top's design is backed up by its technical performance and durability.
Inspired by the multifunctionality of mid-century prefab houses, the Uni Ice countertop serves as an area for preparing meals, a breakfast nook, and a separator between the kitchen and dining room.
The all white flooring and walls also work seamlessly with the pure white design which contrasts well with the bold orange overhead cabinets.
The steel beams also serve to define each space without fully separating anything within it, a common concept used in mid-century house designs. The unorthodox lighting finishes also adds to the personalized feel, as the adjustable wall sconces lights up the orange cabinets.
The abundant use of natural light from the multiple windows also helps with giving a different vibe that depends on the time of day as the sunlight slightly reflects off of the mostly white apartment and casts all sorts of shadows across the room.
La Reina Obrera aimed to manifest the concepts from the Case Study Houses that clearly separated day and night areas, incorporated open spaces, made use of fluid air circulation, and simple spatial separations without the use of walls. The firm also wanted everything to be simple and less cluttered to the eyes by installing decorative designs that integrate with the architecture, not compete with it.
